Les lignées
The format of these paintings plays a part in the impression of authority that emerges. We know the importance Malévitch attributed to the square, a shape he believed symbolised the freedom taken by the artist faced with natural forms. Freed from reference to landscape, Monique Frydman's painting asserts itself here as a purely mental expression – pure abstraction at the service of the highlighting of the new use of colour. A model of the desire to expose in all their glory the pulsation, enveloping, and resonance effects resulting from this open game of colours, this series also marks a further step for the artist in expressing painting's flatness. Animated by a constellation of signs created by the impression of a light relief of twigs placed under the canvas, the painting unfurls without hindrance in an almost homogeneous manner.
